Performance
Subaru has developed a new Atkinson-Miller cycle 2.5-liter flat-four engine for the Forester's hybrid system. It employs two electric motors, with one driving the wheels and the other serving as a generator, working in combination with the internal combustion engine. The engine alone is responsible for 162 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque.
The electric motor generates 118 horsepower and 199 pound-feet with an ultimate output of 194 horsepower, which is a nice boost over the 180 horsepower you'd get in a standard Forester. The system sits within a new transaxle that includes a front differential gear and an electronically controlled coupling. Fuel economy is outstanding and will give you a money-saving 36 combined city/highway MPG.
